Port Allegany is nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds. It was originally known as Canoe Place because it was the location where travelers coming overland from the Susquehanna River could continue by boat on the Allegheny River. It's name was changed to Port Allegany in 1838, and was incorporated in September 1881.
Today, Port Allegany is a quaint town that provides residents with a safe environment surrounded by forests and access to almost any form of outdoor recreation you can imagine.
Port Allegany Borough is a municipality in Pennsylvania which is governed by the Port Allegany Borough Council and a Mayor. Borough departments include the Administrative Offices, Police Department, and Public Works. Water and Sewer Services are provided through a partnership with the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Port Allegany. The Borough also provides support for the Fire Department, Ambulance Service, and the
S. W. Smith Public Library.
The largest employer in Port Allegany is Ardagh Group which manufactures glass containers, specializing in wine bottles and other containers for the food and wine industry. There are also numerous stores, shops, restaurants and professional offices serving the community.
Port Allegany is home to two school systems - the Port Allegany Area School District and the Seneca Highlands Career & Technical Center. The Port Allegany Area School District provides students with high quality educational opportunities as well as exceptional extracurricular sports, music, and drama programs. The Seneca Highlands Career & Technical Center services 10 school districts from 3 counties and provides a wide range of career training programs for high school students and adults.
